La oficina fue fundada por Anne Kaestle y Dan Schürch en 2007, después de que ambos coincidieran en el prestigioso estudio de Marcel Meili y Markus Peter en Zurich. Seguramente de ellos aprendieron algunas de las mejores cualidades de la arquitectura suiza, meticulosa en la comprensión del problema arquitectónico y precisa en la definición constructiva. Precisamente parece ser que de esta combinación de características nace la colaboración entre ambos, en la que Anne Kaeltle aporta una mirada creativa desacomplejada y Dan Schürch el rigor y la precisión de la observación técnica de las construcciones. Es el origen de un proyecto común (casi podríamos decir "comunitario") que se expande a Alemania con Sarah Escher y Christof Weber y a Francia con Henrik Siebenpfeiffer.
Los intereses compartidos de esta comunidad se reflejan de manera destacada en algunos proyectos residenciales que se narran (y es importante el concepto narrativo) en esta publicación. Su aproximación al hábitat es sumamente sugerente por su capacidad para explorar las condiciones diferenciales de cada contexto y cada modelo de relación humana. Para la publicación han seleccionado cinco proyectos -diferentes en escalas, condiciones y situaciones urbanas-, que, sin embargo, son explicados desde lógicas coherentes, atractivas y comparables. El edificio de viviendas para estudiantes Habitat (Basilea, 2019); el edificio WALO (Zurich, 2019); el barrio Buchegg (Zurich, 2018); el complejo residencial Limmatfeld (Dietikon, 2019); y, por supuesto, el complejo cooperativo Hunziker Areal (Zurich, 2015) son los protagonistas de este relato coral, los que demuestran la capacidad de innovación en el ámbito de la vivienda, en diferentes momentos del proceso y en muchos aspectos arquitectónicos y constructivos.
Con estos cinco protagonistas, la publicación se plantea como una colección compendiada de fascículos que abordan monográficamente cada uno de los ejemplos. En ellos hay espacio para la introducción crítica a cada problema planteado, el registro de su atmósfera y habitantes, la descripción arquitectónica y las reflexiones aprendidas. Voces muy interesantes, como las de Andreas Ruby o Philip Ursprung, acompañan los propios textos de Kaestle y Schürch, en los que muestran sus inquietudes y compromisos.
En su conjunto, el libro es una aproximación generosa a su trabajo, pero es también un acercamiento a una manera de diseñar vivienda que pone a las personas en el centro del proceso creativo. The office was founded by Anne Kaestle and Dan Schürch in 2007, after they both worked together in the prestigious studio of Marcel Meili and Markus Peter in Zurich. Surely from them they learned some of the best qualities of Swiss architecture, meticulous in understanding the architectural problem and precise in constructive definition. It seems precisely that the collaboration between the two is born from this combination of characteristics, in which Anne Kaeltle contributes an unapologetic creative gaze and Dan Schürch the rigor and precision of the technical observation of the constructions. It is the origin of a common project (we could almost say "community") that expands to Germany with Sarah Escher and Christof Weber and to France with Henrik Siebenpfeiffer.
The shared interests of this community are prominently reflected in some of the residential projects that are narrated (and the narrative concept is important) in this publication. His approach to the habitat is highly suggestive due to its ability to explore the differential conditions of each context and each model of human relationship. For the publication they have selected five projects -different in scales, conditions and urban situations-, which, however, are explained from coherent, attractive and comparable logics. Habitat student housing building (Basel, 2019); WALO building (Zurich, 2019); Buchegg neighborhood (Zurich, 2018); Limmatfeld residential complex (Dietikon, 2019); and, of course, cooperative complex Hunziker Areal (Zurich, 2015) are the protagonists of this choral story, which demonstrate the capacity for innovation in the field of housing, at different times of the process and in many architectural and construction aspects.
With these five protagonists, the publication is presented as a compendium collection of fascicles that address each of the examples monographically. In them there is room for the critical introduction to each problem raised, the record of its atmosphere and inhabitants, the architectural description and the reflections learned. Very interesting voices, such as those of Andreas Ruby or Philip Ursprung, accompany Kaestle and Schürch's own texts, in which they show their concerns and commitments.
As a whole, the book is a generous approach to their work, but it is also an approach to a way of designing housing that puts people at the center of the creative process. Using the same concept that Anne Kaestle used in her participation in the exhibition New Standards: Ten Theses on Housing, they are housing biographies. The house from the inhabitants.
