El título del libro se plantea como una pregunta y su lectura puede resumirse como una secuencia de posibles respuestas. Un total de catorce capítulos muestran diferentes acercamientos, en los que tecnología, arquitectura e historia se interpelan recíprocamente en los orígenes de la era digital.
El programa Archaelogy of the Digital es el origen explícito de varias de las aportaciones que se presentan en este libro coral. Tanto el seminario Devices of Design, de 2004, como el más reciente Toolkit for Today: Archaeology of the Digital, de 2013 han dado lugar a presentaciones que son recogidas aquí. Una maravillosa lectura de la arquitectura desde la importancia de la geometría y la numeración, de Mario Carpo, o un original recorrido a través de tres pioneros en la utilización proyectual de datos virtuales (Alexander, Price y Negroponte), de Molly Wright Steenson, son ejemplos recomendables de los aciertos del libro.
El texto ofrece otras contribuciones en forma de pequeños ensayos. The title of the book is presented as a question and its reading can be summarized as a sequence of possible answers. A total of fourteen chapters show different approaches, in which technology, architecture and history are reciprocally interpellated in the origins of the digital era.
