El reciente premio Turner, concedido al colectivo británico Assemble, ha vuelto a poner sobre la mesa el papel de la arquitectura -o la propia concepción disciplinar- en su relación más directa con la sociedad y con las metodologías de trabajo espacial menos convencionales. La exposición y el catálogo The Other Architect son una muestra impecable de la importancia histórica de esas otras arquitecturas. | The recent Turner Prize, awarded to the British collective Assemble, has once again put on the table the role of architecture -or its disciplinar conception- in connection with society and with the less conventional methodologies of spatial working. The exhibition and catalog The Other Architect is an impeccable example of the historical importance of these other architectures.
La muestra, visitable hasta el 10 de abril de 2016 en las galerías principales del Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA), recoge métodos alternativos en el desarrollo de la actividad arquitectónica que se han llevado a cabo por todo el planeta desde la década de 1960. El catálogo de la exposición, un magnífico volumen de gran formato que permite reproducciones muy aceptables de documentos originales, reune materiales de más de una veintena de casos de estudio.
En muchos de los casos vemos cómo se diluye la distinción entre práctica, educación o investigación (por ejemplo AMO de Rem Koolhaas y Dan Wood, o el ILAUD de Giancarlo de Carlo). Algunos ejemplos presentan un papel inesperado de los profesionales de la arquitectura (como los talleres coreográficos Take Part de Lawrence Halprin & Associates). Otros casos exploran las posibilidades metodológicas de la propia investigación (la Leghtweight Enclosures Unit de Frank Newby y Cedric Price podría ser un ejemplo). Y también hay espacio para proyectos que han fomentado la implicación ciudadana y el diálogo en el debate sobre lo público, a través de nuevos formatos y medios.
En conjunto, la muestra revela algunas cuestiones que forman parte de la propia actualidad arquitectónica: la cualidad líquida de la profesión en el mundo contemporáneo, la corresponsabilidad en el diseño de estrategias colaborativas de actuación, o las enormes posibilidades de exploración y experimentación que tienen las prácticas arquitectónicas. Como recogieron N. Awan, T. Schneider y J. Till en el libro Spatial Agency, el modus operandi normal para un arquitecto es añadir algo físico al mundo; la alternativa (parafrasenado a Cedric Price) sugiere que el añadido de un edificio no es necesariamente la mejor solución a un problema espacial y que hay otras maneras de conseguir la diferencia espacial.

The exhibition, that can be visited until 10 April 2016 in the main galleries of the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA), includes alternative methods in the development of architectural activity that have been conducted around the globe since the 1960s. The catalog of the exhibition, a magnificent large format volume that allows very acceptable reproductions of original documents, gather materials from more than twenty case studies.
In many cases we can see diluted the distinction between practice, education or research (e.g. AMO by Rem Koolhaas and Dan Wood, or ILAUD by Giancarlo de Carlo). Some examples show an unexpected role of professional architects (such as Take Part choreographic workshops by Lawrence Halprin & Associates). Other cases explore the methodological possibilities of the investigation itself (the Leghtweight Enclosures Unit of Cedric Price and Frank Newby could be an example). And there is also room for projects that promote citizen involvement and dialogue in the debate on public issues, through new formats and media.
Overall, the book reveals some issues that are part of the architectural present: the liquid quality of the profession in the contemporary world, the shared responsibility in the collaborative design of new action strategies, or the enormous possibilities for exploration and experimentation within architectural practices.
